Attic Door Spring Broke

I figure i should replace both of them and.

Attic door spring broke.

The door usually is counterbalanced to the ceiling with folding steel arms and two heavy duty springs. The spring is 9 1 2 not counting the loops which are 3 4 each the diameter is 3 4 and there are 72 coils. There are 3 hooks so the spring can be pulled to the best one. Ask the assistant to lift the steps and close the stairs.

Pull down the stairs and switch on the attic light. It s similar to the one shown. An attic stair which is actually more of a ladder is a fairly simple apparatus consisting of a folding series of steps attached to a door. One of mine broke after 37 years.

On one side the spring always comes off its bracket when the door opens. The arm on that side looks like it s bent out. In order to get the door to close we have to bend the arm back in as much as we can and hook the spring back over the bracket at the top.
